Caution

Learn about Satan so that you can resist him and understand the evil around you, but don’t live focused on Satan or other fallen angels.

C.S. Lewis’ book The Screwtape Letters is a collection of fictional letters of advice written by a senior demon, Screwtape, to his nephew, Wormwood, a junior demon. It’s an excellent work. Though fiction it sheds much light on the nature of demonic activity. The preface includes the following caution:

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”

That’s well put, and I offer it as a caution to readers of this site. I believe it’s important for Christians to have a clear and Biblical understanding of Satan, his fellow demons and his human children, the lost. We need to know their nature, motives, tactics and much more.

But our primary focus must be on our triune God, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Satan has already lost. The battle has already been won, Satan never had the slightest chance of winning and we’re just waiting for God to bring it all to a close.

So, learn about Satan so that you can resist him and understand the evil around you, but don’t live focused on Satan or other fallen angels. Live focused on Jesus, who conquered Satan by sacrificing himself on the cross for our sins.
